Our proposed solution is a system to enable real time monitoring of the passenger and baggage supporting the IATA e-ticketing system which is intended to be fully implemented in airports across the world by the end of 2007.
The ability to monitor passenger/baggage movements in an airport environment provides numerous critical benefits:
- Detection of abnormal behaviour (including being alerted when a passenger leaves the airport after checking in baggage)
- Calculating the likelihood of a passenger missing a flight (distance between passenger and departing terminal)
- Airport evacuation
The project will generate unique IPR in modelling passenger behaviour, IPR in the boarding card device, and IPR in importing and analysing multiple data streams.
Two key additional benefits are:- Economically - this system will provide ~100% passenger/luggage reconciliation because they are inextricably linked, reducing dramatically the estimated €2.4b per annum in baggage repatriation costs
- Environmentally – the boarding device will be recyclable thereby significantly reducing the requirements of airlines to buy in millions of boarding cards per year (an estimated saving of €8m per average sized airport)
